Puma 1977 Remix Contest

Jaded Lover is the grand-prize winner in the Puma 1977 Remix Contest,

sponsored by Puma and Remix magazine. Click here to listen to the winning track.

And in Jaded Lover’s own words, here’s how the track was created:

For the remix competition, we decided on using the song "Everybody Dance" by Chic. The song first appeared on Chic's self-titled debut released on Atlantic Records in 1977.

The first thing we did was to import the audio file of the complete song into Ableton Live, where we time-stretched the entire track in order to tighten up the drumming. Then we selected snippets of the tune and rearranged them to create a different chord structure.

We used Arturia's Prophet V and Minimoog soft synths to bring in our own bass line and synth elements. We also used the Impulse drum machine in Live to sequence our own drum pattern to layer under the original track's percussion. The sounds loaded into the machine were a simple TR-909 kick and clap, which were sampled from the original Roland TR-909. After laying out the bulk of the track, we went back and added effects, details, and textures using the VST plug-ins available in Live. To give the track a fuller, warmer sound, we used the VST plug-in T-Racks, a vintage tube EQ/compressor/limiter emulator by IK Multimedia. After the song was finished, we simply rendered out the completed version and used Apple's iTunes to convert the file into an MP3.

About the Contest:

The year was 1977. Women were princesses, men were party-hopping playboys, and The Commodores were “Easy” like Sunday morning. A mixture of the confident swagger and breezy glamour of the jet-setting crowd filled the air, as Donna Summer felt love with Giorgio Moroder, and Fleetwood Mac spread Rumours around the globe.

Today, the international retro style of 30 years ago lives on with new twists in music, film and fashion. Seize your opportunity to turn legacy into limelight by remixing a song from 1977. Whether it’s something to make ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” get loose or KC & the Sunshine Band “Shake Shake Shake” their booties, this is your chance to create a remix worthy of a timeless party.

Pick a song that was first released in 1977, and produce a white-label remix of it. We’ll choose three finalists, and remixmag.com readers will vote for their favorite. The winner will receive a stash of Puma gear and a flyaway package (air travel and hotel) to Remix Hotel Atlanta September 20-22, 2007 to present how they made the winning remix to Hotel attendees.
